Fourth graders at F.E. Bellows just about ran rings around professional circus performers as they wowed the Rye Neck community just before Thanksgiving. After a week of intensive practice with Cirque Du Jour, they were ready for their close-ups.

“This is something the fourth-grade students look forward to from the time they arrive at Bellows. It’s an interactive program that is great for collaboration and team work,” said Principal Marge Longabucco. “Even a student who may not be a star in every one of his or her classes shines in the circus.”

Designed for children of all ages, Cirque du Jour is open to the entire school, with the show reserved for fourth-grade classes only. Professional circus coaches offer students the opportunity to experience this magical world in a safe, non-competitive, fun environment.

Culminating in a festive family evening, the program’s workshops include ball and scarf juggling, plate spinning, rhythm sticks, stilt walking, acrobatics, and clowning.

“The children love it so much, they begin asking for monkey sticks for Christmas or Hanukkah,” noted Longabucco. “All one has to do is watch the faces of the kids, parents, and grandparents to know why we bring back the program year after year.”
