Three Fall Weekends, and So Much to Do

It is the middle of October in Rye. After a month of back-to-school nights, Jewish holidays, the start of the fall sports season, and a rousing win at the Rye/ Harrison game, the calendar in town is about to get even busier. On top of the dance classes, music lessons, play rehearsals, ACT and SAT test prep classes, soccer practices and soccer games, PTO meetings, college visits, tennis matches and golf rounds, there are some family and couple-friendly weekend events coming that you will want to check out. Not surprisingly, many are fundraisers. Much beloved local organizations are capitalizing on the crisp air, the fall colors, and your generosity of spirit to get you to turn out. But how do you decide? What follows is a recommendation for the next three weekends.

On Friday, October 12 grab your spouse and some friends and head on over at 7 to Rye Nature Center’s Oktoberfest for hops, vines, delicious eats, and warm conversation. Dirndls encouraged. Wake up the next morning, October 13. Plan to spend a few hours after noon at Fall Fest at Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary, where you’ll be enraptured by a birds of prey demonstration, pick pumpkins, spend time in close company with a variety of creatures, listen to stories, learn about kayaking, paddleboard, and yoga from experts, and enjoy live music, food truck fare and the edible bug bar. Then wander across the Boardwalk to the Westchester Children’s Museum for exploration and play. Finish the day at Scared by the Sound at Playland, a 12,000 square-foot foot haunted house and cemetery located next to the darkened rides at Playland Amusement Park. Cap off the weekend at the Marshlands Conservancy for the opening of the 45^th Marshlands Photography Exhibit from 2-5. If the day is fine, leave time to enjoy the beauty of the preserve on foot.

The following weekend, October 19-21 should begin with a Friday evening at the theater taking in none other than Rye High School’s fall play, “Our Town”. Rye Town Park and The Rye Arts Center are co-hosting their own Fall Festival in the Park on Saturday with a petting zoo, live music, and pumpkin painting. And if that’s not enough fall fun, wander downtown on Sunday, where teams of children will be painting the shop and business windows just in time for Halloween. This perennial favorite is sponsored by Rye Recreation and The Woman’s Club of Rye, Children’s Philanthropy.

On Saturday, October 27, wake up bright and early and bring the whole family over to the Osborn Scare Fair – Osborn Elementary School’s biggest fundraiser and the carnival loved by so many kids. The Cake Walk is a particular favorite.
