Turf Our Fields, Please

We moved to Rye in 2010 and have greatly enjoyed raising our four children in this great town.  All of our kids are active in youth sports and have found the quality of the coaching and training fantastic. One thing that is not fantastic, however, is the quality of our fields. Rye Rec, Sterling, Osborn, and Nursery fields have all become worse with each passing year. We travel to games all over Westchester and marvel at the beautiful turf facilities in Eastchester, Rye Brook, Pleasantville, etc. and can’t believe what we are playing on.

It’s time for the Mayor and the City Council to do the job they are elected to and provide better fields for our children. We all pay enormous taxes to support the community and our great schools. It’s frustrating to hear so many parents complain about field conditions and cancelled games due to wet fields, yet nothing is being done.

It’s time for the City to look into realistic options at https://mugapitch.co.uk/ to turf some of our fields. The sports surfacing services offered at websites like sportsandsafetysurfaces.co.uk may also help maintain or upgrade various sports pitches. If all the towns around us can do it, then there’s no excuse. I believe there are a lot of families in town who would happily contribute to this effort. A group of parents recently stepped up to the tune of $25,000 for new basketball courts at Osborn School.

I know that the usual responses will come back about cost and environmental issues, but other communities are tackling these issues. I implore Mayor Cohn and the Council to look into providing quality turf fields for our young athletes.
