UPDATED: Rye schools close Tuesday

The Rye City School District has closed all of its schools and offices Tuesday as weather forecasts now call for snow and freezing rain through the early afternoon.

“I had hoped that a 2-hour delay would be sufficient, but the updated forecast with freezing rain presents too much risk for unsafe driving conditions,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Eric Byrne.

All after-school activities and athletics have also been canceled by the school district. The Board of Education is still expected to meet as scheduled this evening, however.

The school district had initially announced a two-hour delay Tuesday morning with forecasts predicting up to four inches of snow.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Southeast New York through 7 p.m. Tuesday. Total snow accumulations of 1-3 inches and ice accumulations of nearly an inch are expected. The temperature will also remain below freezing through Tuesday afternoon and with snow turning to freezing rain, the evening commute could see potentially hazardous road conditions.
