RYE CITY SCHOOLS:
Over the summer, the District’s technology consultants have made, and will continue to make, numerous upgrades to the network to improve reliability.

Over the summer, the District’s technology consultants have made, and will continue to make, numerous upgrades to the network to improve reliability. The School District has a new firewall, improved cabling, and Wi-Fi connectivity, and has migrated to the Google email system. Rye High School

At the High School, nine teachers underwent training in teaching Advanced Placement sections over the summer, some for new classes they are teaching, and some just to further hone their skills.

This fall, Rye High is offering the second course in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) sequence, Principals of Engineering. Students will be exposed to different aspects of engineering and to engineering field career options, and will engage in practical, hands-on activities in a variety of engineering disciplines. As another means of supporting the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) initiative, the school is offering a new half-year course in 3D Design and Architecture through the Art Department. The RHS parent organization has generously given the school a 3D printer that will be used in this new course and other Art Department classes.

All labs received new desktop computers over the summer, and the band room underwent a substantial renovation.

Finally, the High School, which has seen an increase in enrollment over the last few years, has added a new guidance counselor, Mr. Garrett Renner, to assist students with the college choice and application process.

 

Middle School

Over the summer, Middle School English, History, Social Studies, and Science teachers began working with the District’s literacy consultant. The District’s literacy initiative, already in place at the elementary schools, is extending to the Middle School this year, with teachers implementing a readers’ workshop model of study. A second year American Sign Language class debuts for those students who participated in the pilot program last year, and there are new Spanish 2 and 8th- grade Spanish courses for those students who participated in the District’s FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools) program. The Middle School has all-new desktop computers ready for the new school year.  

 

Rye Elementary Schools

The elementary schools are moving to a full-day Kindergarten program. After a three-week “ease-in” period, Kindergartners will attend school from 8:40-3 beginning on September 28. In all of the Kindergarten classrooms teacher aides will be replaced by teacher assistants. And Kindergartners will enjoy Art and Music for the first time.

The District’s literacy initiative continues in the elementary schools, with the consultant moving into the classroom to coach teachers in situ. The elementary school labs all received new desktop computers over the summer.
