Rye Country Day’s girls hockey team is on fire this season, racking up 11 wins while losing just once — a distant memory — to Greenwich Academy back on December 12.

The Wildcats’ won at home on January 18 when they beat Princeton Day School, 3-0. Senior forward Rose Rather, freshman Sara Ince, and sophomore Ciara Clare each had a goal and an assist. Princeton’s goalie got pelted in the net, coming up with 32 saves.

Rather, who plans to play college hockey at Holy Cross next winter, is averaging nearly three goals per game the past two seasons. She came to Rye Country Day as a junior after playing on the King School boys’ varsity team in Stamford. Rather is expected to shatter Elizabeth Wulf’s career scoring record of 104 goals set in 2011, also in two seasons.

Two weeks ago, the Wildcats won a tournament hosted by the Women’s Ice Hockey League of the Mid-Atlantic in Pittsburgh. They beat Holton Arms 7-1 and Shady Side 3-0. Goaltender Rebecca Mendelsohn, a senior co-captain, had 36 saves in two games.

Coach Courtney Doucette said the team is “focusing on the little things, one step at a time. Shift by shift, period by period, game by game.”

Rye Country Day was set to play Morristown Beard and Portledge post-deadline.
