In a well-played and very competitive game, Rye Country Day lost to Fieldston 4-3 in the State softball final at Manhattanville on May 22.
The Wildcats roared back from a 4-0 deficit in the fifth inning, scoring two and adding one more in the sixth. Rye Country Day threatened to overcome Fieldston in the top of the seventh, but brilliant fielding by the ultimate State champion dashed the hometown team’s hopes.
Meanwhile, Holy Child was bumped out of the State playoffs on May 20, losing 6-5 to Riverdale at Randall’s Island. The Gryphons fought back from a 6-0 deficit with a five-run, two-out rally in the fifth inning. In the top of the seventh, Holy Child loaded the bases with two out. Bella Mazzola, a senior right fielder, lined a shot up the middle that Riverdale’s shortstop dived for, making a spectacular play for the win.
Holy Child handed Rye Country Day its only other defeat of the season on May 3, by a score of 10-7.
