Woke Up Early, Kayaked to School

Woke Up Early, Kayaked to School

It was “Walk to School Week” at Milton and fourth-grade teacher Ms. Fishman created a chart to mark how each student got to school. Most replied by foot, bike, scooter, or car. But when it was Henry Field’s turn, he replied, “None of the above”. The teacher looked at him quizzically and asked him to explain. “By kayak,” he announced proudly.

From the Field’s home on Harbor Terrace Drive, which includes its own dock on Blind Brook, Henry is not the only member of his family who has found a great way to get to school. He pointed out that you can kayak to Rye Middle and High schools, “but it is trickier to time the tide.”

Henry’s mother Lisa notes that it is a safe route, as there is a crossing guard right next to the Rye Marina guarding the only street that needs to be crossed once ashore.

“Some mornings the water is like glass with fish jumping, and some mornings it is windy and cold, but it is always an adventure. Often, you will see osprey fishing and swans out for a morning swim,” notes Lisa Field. “You don’t always know what you’ll see along the way to school from the water, but you know you won’t be disappointed you carpooled by kayak.”

Henry promises he has never told his teachers that the fish ate his homework.
