State Assemblyman George Latimer, 58, easily defeated Republican businessman Bob Cohen in the race for State Senate on November 6.

Latimer topped Cohen, 54 to 46 percent, to win the 37th District Senate seat left vacant with the retirement of State Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer.

Former Rye Mayor Steve Otis, 55, defeated Republican Bill Villanova in a bid to fill Latimer’s 91st District Assembly seat. Otis has been counsel and chief of staff to Oppenheimer the past 27 years.

Otis’ margin of victory over Villanova — who is Deputy Rye Town Supervisor — was 63 to 37 percent.

Countywide, President Obama received 221,534 votes to Republican Mitt Romney’s 133,524, for a lead of 62 to 37 percent. A breakdown of local vote totals was not available.

Congressman Eliot L. Engel was re-elected to his 16th District seat, defeating Republican businessman Joe McLaughlin, 68 to 30 percent.

In an uncontested race for Rye City Council, Republican appointee Julie Killian was elected to complete an unexpired term that ends Dec. 31, 2013. She received 4,181 votes.
