Rye Schools Superintendent Dr. Frank Alvarez began Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting by praising 15 students in grades 5-12 for their selections to the Westchester All County and All State Music Ensembles. “We have recognized our academic and athletic standouts already and now we want to recognize these outstanding musicians,” said Alvarez.
Nearly two and a half hours later, the meeting drew to a close on a jarring note that took both the Board and audience members by surprise. A Rye High School parent of a 12th grader stood up and accused district administrators of attempting to unfairly expel the student based on residency requirements. The parent met with school officials, and the District changed its ruling and will allow the student to stay in school.
Board Ed Fox said he had not known about the situation. Board President Laura Slack cut Fox off, saying the Board could not comment on any individual student issues. Other Board members appeared surprised by the serious allegations.
