Worldly Reflections

The Rye library invites all to the opening reception There will be an artist’s reception for Elissa Carroll at the Rye library on Saturday from 2-4. Having worked professionally doing illustrations, commercial murals, and private commissions for 25 years, the artist is intrigued by the “colors, lighting, and shadowing of our world.” The exhibit runs through the end of June.

The Three Voices

Head to the Rye library on Mondays from 12-2:30 to hear great concerts you may have missed. On June 11, listen to Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli’s “One Night in Central Park,” which was broadcast across the world. On June 18, enjoy Barbra Streisand’s “Live at the MGM,” recorded after her 27-year absence from the concert stage. Celine Dion takes the stage in “Live in Las Vegas” on June 25.

Bring lunch, sit back, and enjoy.

Fake Views?

The Jay Heritage Center will host a talk on a New York City bill to protect art authenticators on June 19 from 5:30-8. Center for Art Law founder Irina Tarsis will discuss the Salvador Mundi art fraud case and the Knoedler Gallery’s forged paintings saga.

The free talk is co-sponsored by the New Rochelle Bar Association.

The Rye Arts Center is hosting a reception for its student/instructor art exhibit on June 21 from 5-7. On view through July, the exhibit celebrates the works of the Center’s talented community, young and old, novice and accomplished.

Classic Celtic

Irish singer and musician Ian Gallagher will perform Irish classics at the Rye library on June 23 from 2-3:30. The musician will entertain the audience with stories about the history of Ireland and anecdotes about the songs being performed. Admission is free.

Excel at Excel

Learn the basics of the versatile Excel Spreadsheet program at the Rye library June 14 from 10-12. Former IBM executive Mike Negrelli will cover setting up spreadsheets, saving to computers, retrieving, and printing.

Hit the Dirt

Join volunteers who are giving something back to the earth at Read Sanctuary June 16 at 10. Help with invasive plant removal, trail work, and beach clean-up, all while getting some exercise.

Spine Tingling

The Osborn is hosting a free seminar on “Your Aching Back: Solutions for Chronic Back Pain” on June 19 at 7:30. Dr. Paul Apostolides of Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery Specialists will be joined by Osborn Rehabilitation Director Robert D’Elia and outline spinal health, non-invasive options, and reconstructive spine surgery.

Let it Flow

Join SPRYE for a free Chi Kung presentation at Wainwright House June 20 from 3-4:30. Practitioner Rita Stewart will include an introduction to simple Chi Kung exercises that enhance energy. She will also cover the first section of Tai Chi.

Both ancient practices can have major positive effects on osteoarthritis, balance, depression, pain management, and one’s immune system.

Wear sneakers and loose pants.

Nature as Muse

The grounds of Wainwright House will serve as the inspiring backdrop to a writing workshop on June 23 from 9-12. Learn the principles of ecology, nature interpretation, and mindful awareness to gain deeper enjoyment.

Participants will go on a walk and sit on the ground. The fee is $75 for members, $85 non-members.

Social Butterflies

See what species of butterflies are out and about at Read Sanctuary on June 23 at 10. For visitors who have binoculars, do bring them.

Beach Reads

The Rye library’s Current Events Book Group will meet to talk about “Ramp Hollow: The Ordeal of Appalachia” by Steven Stoll on June 26 from 6:30-8. The author offers a fresh and provocative account of the evolution of this region, examining crucial episodes such as the Whiskey Rebellion.

Friday Book Café will discuss “The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir” by Jennifer Ryan on July 6 from 9:30-11. This debut novel illuminates the strength of women on the home front in England during World War II.

Tune in to Yourself

A three-part Introduction to Meditation course at Wainwright explores mindfulness meditation on June 26 and July 10 and 17 from 7-9. Discover the ability to tune into your senses and be present to what is happening moment by moment. Participants will gain a clearer awareness of their thoughts and emotions.

Try a Little V&V

Vino and Vinyasa at Wainwright’s House heads outdoors for the summer. Enjoy a yoga session overlooking Milton Harbor, followed by a delicious wine tasting on June 28 from 6:30-9.

The fee is $25 per person.

Observation Post

Capture a quick representation of natural objects and landscape features in a guided program at Read Wildlife Sanctuary June 30 at 1. Sketching is great practice for building nature observation skills.

Bring a sketchbook and pencil. No previous art training is necessary.

Downward Dads

Celebrate Father’s Day with family yoga at Wainwright House on June 17 from 3-4. Asanas, partner poses, breathing techniques, and hands-on activities and games will offer a bonding experience to remember.

Wheely Tasty

All are welcomed to the 3^rd Annual Food Truck Festival at Rye Recreation Park on June 23 from 1-5. There will be 12 food trucks, bands, and activities for kids.

Summer Blockbusters

Head to the Rye library for daily matinees. “Rock Dog” will bring down the house on June 26. “Peter Rabbit” will hop his way to the farmer’s vegetable garden on June 27. “Sherlock Gnomes” will solve the case of their missing friends on June 28 and “A Wrinkle in Time” will send kids on a dangerous journey to another planet on June 29. All showings are from 1-2:35.

Little Hands, Big Creations

The Rye Arts Center still has room in its summer warmup for pre-K kids June 18-June 22. This morning program is an educational, multi-disciplinary creative arts immersion. Children will explore the arts while developing cognitive, social, and motor skills through drawing, painting, music and creative movement.

Juggling Reading

The National Circus Project kicks off the Rye library’s summer reading program June 22 from 2-4. A panoramic presentation will feature circus skills, including unicycling, balancing, and clowning, as well as plenty of comedy and lots of audience participation.

The program, for children entering Kindergarten through fifth grade, runs through September 7.

You Can’t Win if You Don’t Read

The Rye library is holding a Teen Reading Raffle June 22 at 9. The chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card is as simple as reading a book and writing a review.

Starting June 23, participants can write as many reviews of different books as they like, including audiobooks and graphic novels. Then drop a review into the library’s teen room raffle box. Enter all summer long through September 7, when the drawing will be held.

Claw Your Way to the Top

Design and build a hydraulic claw at the Rye library on June 28 from 4:15-5:30. Instructor Irum Khan will offer guidance to create one just like those in arcades.
