Colorful Art at Nest
Stop by Nest Friday from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. to welcome Connecticut artist Kerri Rosenthal and see her works. Influenced by her career in retail and wholesale clothing, the palette of colors from décor and fashion inform her paintings.
Corks Will Be Popping

Outdoor Flick
Rye Recreation invites fourth and fifth graders to see “The Adventures of Tin Tin” on a huge screen Friday from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Popcorn and drinks will be served. Cost is $15 for residents, $20 non-residents.
Up in the Air, and Down on the Ground
Bring binoculars for sightings of warblers Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at the Marshlands. From 1-3 p.m. help remove debris and unwanted vegetation.
Sole Ryeders Fundraiser
Help cover an entire tennis court at Rye Rec with coins, all of which will be donated to the Pinwheel Project in support of children with cancer. Stop by the courts Saturday between 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and place your coins on the court.
Other activities include community art projects, which will be used to decorate the hospital rooms of children undergoing bone marrow transplants, a holiday card workshop, and a bake sale. Donations to “Coin for Coin Partners” go toward The Wig Exchange, which provides high quality wigs for women undergoing chemotherapy.

Summer Saturday Bargains
Miriam’s Attic, The Osborn’s Resale Shop, will hold the first of five Summer Saturday Sales from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Stop by and shop for great furniture, household items, kitchenware, and fine women’s accessories. There’s new merchandise every week.
Mark your calendars for the other Saturday Sales: June 9, July 14, August 11, and September 8.
The shop, which is staffed by volunteers, is open to the public on Tuesdays year-round. Proceeds benefit The Osborn’s Charity Care Program, which enables members of the community with little or no ability to pay for their care to receive services in their own home.

Another Season Opener
The sounds of old-time carousel organ music will fill the air as Playland hosts its 84th opening day May 12. The fun gets under way with a parade and entertainment at 11 a.m. Rides open at noon. Grab a seat in front of the Music Tower Theater stage to hear the band Reunion perform hit sounds from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s at 1, 3, and 5 p.m. Children can enjoy “Mad about Science” shows at 2 and 4 p.m. The $15 admission fee includes unlimited rides until 7 p.m.
A Really Big Animal Show
Dads can bring their children to a fun-filled animal adventure Saturday from 9:15-10 a.m. at Rye Nature Center. Be prepared for hands-on animal encounters with birds, snakes, chinchilla, and leopard gecko. Cost is $10 for members, $15 non-members.

Help Feed the Community
Helping Hands for the Homeless and Hungry presents Carol Birch’s “Steinbeck Out Loud” May 16 at 1:30 p.m. at Community Synagogue. Listening to Birch’s interpretation of “The Grapes of Wrath”, a thoroughly American novel brings you deep inside Steinbeck’s world and makes you think about today’s struggles too.

Juilliard at the Jay
The Jay Heritage Center presents the next installment in its popular concert series May 20 from 4-6 p.m. The evening highlights music that John Jay might have heard in his role as Minister to Spain from 1779-1782.
“Concitato” and the artists of Juilliard’s Historical Instruments Program will electrify listeners with rarely heard Baroque masterpieces played on antique instruments. Audience members will be enthralled by Joan Plana on violin, Ezra Seltzer on cello, Jeffrey Grossman on harpsichord, Priscilla Smith on oboe, and Grant Herreid on guitar. After the musical performance, enjoy a Q & A with the artists.
“Concitato” combines the latest discoveries in musicological research with cutting-edge training. “Technically adept and expressive performances (and) gracefully wrought renditions of works,” says The New York Times.

Our Four-Legged Friends
“Pet Photography with Artistic Effects,” an exhibit of Barbara Gebala’s images of rescued cats and dogs and artwork inspired by them is on display at the Rye library through the end of May.
The photographer, a local graphic designer and artist, has been a volunteer with Pet Rescue, a non-profit organization based in Larchmont, since 2000. Gebala dedicates the show to all those pets that were given a second chance in life, all those still waiting, and those that will not make it.
Sculpture Re-imagined
“Beyond Rodin — New Directions in Contemporary Figurative Sculpture” runs through June 16 at the Rye Arts Center. The exhibit features works by 20 sculptors who create innovative contemporary works of the human form. Rye sculptor Bob Clyatt, who curated the exhibit, assembled works from nationally recognized artists. A stunning collection.

Avoid Skin Cancer and Treat Bad Backs
Community Health at Greenwich Hospital will present two programs at the Rye library. The first, on May 15, will focus on skin cancer prevention and sun safety.
Spending time outdoors on a warm sunny day is one of the joys of summer, but too much unprotected exposure to the sun can lead to damaged skin and skin cancer.
Dermatologist Dr. Lynne Haven will tell how to protect yourself from the sun by wearing proper clothing and choosing the right sunscreen.
On June 13, neurosurgeon Dr. Andrea Douglas will speak about degenerative lumbar spine disease. Learn about the most common causes of low back and radiating leg pain and the new minimally invasive techniques for treating it. Ongoing clinical trials of spinal fusion techniques at Greenwich Hospital will be presented.

What’s Happening Book Group
The Current Events Book Group, moderated by John Dolan, meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 6:30-8 p.m. to talk about books that offer diverse opinions about timely concerns, whether economic, political, social or international. Mother-Daughter Workshop
Sixth-grade girls and their mothers/caregivers can discuss puberty, values, sexual health, and how to communicate, as the teen-age years approach. The workshop will be held at the Rye Y May 16 from 6-8:30 p.m.
Girls Inc. Westchester is a nonprofit organization that offers girls-only programs at schools and community centers throughout Westchester to help ‘tween and teen girls navigate the real-life challenges they confront during middle and high school.

Get Ready for Summer Reading
Magician and entertainer Jim Vagias will introduce the Dream Big – Read! Summer Reading Program theme with a fun show at the Rye library May 19 at 2 p.m. Children ages four and up will laugh and learn as Magic Jim and his trusty sidekick puppet Mortimer present a blend of tricks and books to explore dreams and imagination.
Bounce Along to the Music
Babies and pre-school children will enjoy the movement and music of Robert the Guitar Guy when he performs at the Rye library May 22 at 1:30 p.m. The high-energy performer gets kids giggling with a mix of guitar, puppets, rhythm instruments, and plenty of marching and dancing. Bring binoculars for sightings of hummingbirds and the latest wave of arrivals from the South, at the Marshlands May 19 at 7:30 a.m. From 1-3 p.m. help clean up the forest restoration area.

Go on an exciting adventure in science at the Meeting House May 12 at 4 p.m. Rye’s own internationally recognized research scientist Joy Reidenberg, Ph.D., will speak about her research focused on the anatomy of whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Learn how they produce sounds and withstand the pressures of diving.
Reidenberg’s research often appears on television, such as the Discovery Channel’s “The Science of Whales” and National Geographic’s “Humpbacks: Breaking the Code”.

Sew Rye
Rye resident Kim Mulcahy has organized sewing camps that will have kids in stitches all summer long.
Project Runway runs July 2-6, July 9-13, July 16-20, and July 23-27 from 1-4 p.m. Girls will learn to design a complete outfit and accessories. On Fridays participants will model their designs in a fashion show and photo shoot, where moms are welcome. Cost is $275.
Teddy Bear Fashion Show runs July 2-6 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Begin the week learning sewing basics, and then create clothes and accessories for your bear. Cost is $250.
Intro to Patterns runs July 9-13 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Learn the basics and make a tote bag, skirt, and sun-top. End the week with a fashion show and photo shoot. Cost is $250.
Let’s Stitch runs July 16-20 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Learn to make embroidery stitches, cute wall hangings, journal covers, t-shirts, and embroidered button jewelry. Cost is $250.
Hippy Chicks runs July 23-27 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Make a cool messenger bag, turn jeans into shorts or a skirt, tie-dye and embellish a T-shirt, make headbands, bandanas, and bracelets. End the week with a fashion show and photo shoot. Cost is $250.

The Rye Historical Society’s Annual Gala Fundraiser will be held June 2 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Knapp House. This year Pam and Gene McGuire will be honored for their dedicated efforts in bringing Rye’s history to life. The sponsors of the permanent walking tour, Walk Rye History, will also be honored. The tour will be installed over the summer and open for dedication in September.
