Sunrise Yoga 

 

Among Wainwright House’s many yoga offerings are early morning Tuesday and Thursday Zoom classes from 6-7. On February 16 and 23, start your day with stretch and strengthening with Lexy Tomaino’s power yoga. On February 18 and 25, begin with a vinyasa flow and meditation with Maura O’Connor.

Mac & Cheese 

 

Join Sarah Wassberg Johnson for the Rye library’s special Zoom cooking demonstration and talk February 16 from 6-7:30. On the menu are the making of macaroni and cheese from scratch, the evolution of the French “mother” sauces, as well as how Thomas Jefferson became a macaroni booster, and “Kraft Dinner” became an American staple. 

 

Wassberg Johnson is The Food Historian author, speaker, educator, podcaster, and blogger. She was featured in The History Channel mini-series “The Food That Built America” and on NPR, the Atlantic, and CNN.

Suffragettes Take a Stand   

 

The Bird Homestead and Meeting House Conservancy will present “Through Susan’s Eyes: Susan B. Anthony’s Formative Years in Washington County, NY” on February 20 at 3. Part of the Conservancy’s series, “The Struggle for Women’s Rights: Three Leaders Rooted in Quaker Values, Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul,” the lecture will be given by NorthStar Historical Project president Debi Craig and Greenwich historian Sandy McReynolds. 

 

The illustrated Zoom talk will focus on the nineteen years that the Anthony family lived in the hamlet of Battenville in the town of Greenwich in upstate New York. The Anthony childhood home is now owned by the State of New York and is currently undergoing restoration.

Where Adams and Jefferson Meet Aristotle and Cicero   

 

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Thomas E. Ricks will discuss his new book, “First Principles: What America’s Founders Learned from the Greeks and Romans and How That Shaped Our Country” at a virtual program through Jay Heritage Center February 23 at 6.  

 

Ricks’ revelatory work offers lessons for our nation and examines the founding fathers’ devotion to the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Black History Month 

 

Jay Heritage Center will present the African American Trailblazers Awards virtually February 25 at 5:30. Sponsored by Westchester County Executive George Latimer, the African American Advisory Board, and the County Board of Legislators, the event honors the accomplishments of local citizens of African descent. 

 

This year’s honorees are Mayor Shawn Patterson-Howard, Dr. Glenn A. Davis, Mr. Olney Reynolds, and Dr. Philip Ozuah. In addition, scholar, activist, and author Dr. Larry Spruill will give a special presentation.

Chilling Out with a Tale 

 

Families are invited to Rye library story times on the Village Green Fridays at 10 or 11:30. Next sessions are scheduled for February 19 and 26. They are geared towards preschoolers, but all ages are welcome to enjoy stories, songs, fingerplay, and other activities. 

 

Bring a blanket. Masks are required for all participants over the age of 2. Register at ryelibrary.org.  

 

Density Disco Dance 

 

Families with kids ages 4-8 will travel back in time to the 1970s at the Westchester Children’s Museum February 20 from 11-12. Learn some chemistry by making your own lava lamp sensory bottle to take home. Then break out the dance moves at a dance party.

Trivial Pursuit 

 

Grab your favorite beverage and snacks and join the Rye Youth Council for Trivia Night February 28 at 4:30 on Zoom. Teams can be composed of individuals, friends, or families. Prizes from local merchants will be awarded to the winner of each round. 

 

Purchase a ticket for $30 at ryeyouthcouncil.org. Proceeds will help RYC continue to offer free programs and services that build community and empower children, teens, and young adults.  

 

Marvelous Mindful Moments  

 

Wainwright House is offering a virtual six-week yoga and mindfulness meditation workshop for grades K-2 and their families March 4-April 8 from 4-4:45. Instructor Jennifer Monness will help participants reduce stress and increase focus and concentration through mindful moving, breathing, art activities, and exercise. Kids will develop skills to cope with frustration and make better choices.

Sizzle on the Griddle 

 

February is National Hot Breakfast month, so it’s the perfect time for teens to learn to make scrumptious pancakes through the Rye library. Log on to a Zoom link (ryelibrary.org) on February 19 from 4-4:30 for an easy recipe.  

 

Keep the Peace 

Wainwright is offering middle school students the opportunity to relieve school pressure on Mondays from 4:30-5:30 starting February 22. The UNIS Peacekeepers, led by UN award winner Truike Boekholt, is a club that offers students hands-on strategies.

The Rye library is offering a bird feeder Teen Take and Make kit to accompany a Zoom session on February 26 from 4-5. Weave beautiful macramé upcycled and biodegradable bird feeders, while earning one hour of community service.

The Rye library is offering Coding Clubs on Zoom for girls in grades 3-5 from 3-3:30 and boys and girls in grades 3-5 from 3:30-4:30 on February 16. The theme is Mardi Gras.

Museum Medics 

 

The Westchester Children’s Museum is offering a biology workshop as part of their Museum Voyagers series for ages 7 and up (with a caregiver) on February 27 from 11-12. Doc Harmon will have participants turn into museum medics by wearing stethoscopes and making working models of the lungs and heart.

Families Take the Shot 

 

The Rye YMCA is kicking off its tenth annual 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament March 8. Grades K-1 check in at 12:40; grades 2-3 at 2:20; grades 4-5 at 4:10; and ages 18 and up at 6:15.  

Sponsored by family, friends, and local business to help raise money for the Y’s annual campaign, the event will provide families with the opportunity to participate in programming and summer camp.
