Jonah Shainberg, 17, a junior at Rye High School, will represent the United States at the 2013 Junior and Cadet World Fencing Championships, on April 7-10 in Porec, Croatia.

The top three nationally ranked male and female Junior (age 20 and under) and Cadet (age 17 and under) fencers in each weapon (epee, saber, foil) qualify. Over 80 countries will be represented. Shainberg started and finished this season the No. 1 ranked Cadet saber fencer in the country. He is also the 5^th-ranked Junior saber fencer and is designated as an alternate for that team in Croatia.

 

As part of the 2012-2013 USA Fencing season, Shainberg has spent the past six months competing at North American Cup (NAC) competitions around the country (in St. Louis, Louisville, Virginia Beach, and Milwaukee,) and as part of a select USA team at World Cups in Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Russia, and Phoenix.

 

His best results this season include a silver medal at the Cadet World Cup in Godollo, Hungary in October, a bronze medal at the Cadet NAC in St. Louis in November, a bronze medal at the Division 1 NAC (Olympic team, NCAA, and high school competitors) in Milwaukee in December (where he defeated a member of the U.S. Olympic team to reach the semi-finals), and a bronze medal at the Junior NAC in Louisville in January.

 

During his quarterfinal bout in the Moscow World Cup in November, he fell and injured his left wrist, finishing 5th overall. It was later diagnosed as a fracture and he had surgery to repair it in early February. On February 18, Shainberg competed in the USA Fencing Junior Olympics in Baltimore. He lost in the quarterfinals, placing fifth out of 170 competitors in the Cadet competition.

 

The weekend after the World Championships, Shainberg will compete in another Division 1 NAC in Richmond, Va. In July, after the USA Fencing National Championships in Columbus, Ohio, he will represent the USA in the Maccabiah Games in Israel. He trains with coach Archil Lortkipanidze at Fencer’s Club in New York City, and at Manhattan Fencing Center. 

 

 

 

Rye Country Day seniors Annie Grayer and Clare McClintock, members of the school’s NYSAISAA state championship field hockey team, were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s High School National Academic Squad for 2012-13.

 

The program recognizes outstanding athletic achievement on the field and academic excellence (a minimum 3.5 Grade Point Average) in the classroom.

 

“Clare and Annie have been outstanding ambassadors for the Rye Country Day field hockey program,” said Wildcats coach Georgette Summers. “On the field and in the classroom, Clare and Annie have consistently raised the bar higher. It is rare to find athletes that have been part of three NYSAISAA championship teams, as they were in 2009, 2011, and 2012.”

 

In the fall, Grayer will attend Middlebury and McClintock will attend Harvard.

 

 

Sophomore defender Catharine Greer of the Tufts women’s soccer team was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s All-New England second team.

 

Greer, a 2011 graduate of Rye High School, was named Rookie of the Year last season by the head coaches of the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

 

Tufts finished 4-6-4 overall and 2-6-2 in the league this season. Greer is expected to lead a strong group of returnees next year.

 

 

Rye High senior Catherine Livingston was recognized as a Con Edison Athlete of the Week.

 

This distinction is part of the Westchester Scholastic Sports Award Program. 

Livingston plays soccer, basketball, and softball and is captain of all three varsity teams.

 

She is an outstanding scholar as well: a National Merit Commended Scholar, an AP Scholar, and a member of the National Honor Society. She was the 2012 recipient of the Hobart and William Smith Book Award, which recognizes a student who is “grounded in values of equity and service.” By the time she graduates, she will have completed seven AP classes and earned four college credits for the Syracuse University Project Advance Forensics course.

 

In nominating her for the Con Edison award, Soccer Coach Rich Savage wrote, “She never shies away from a challenge and believes it is these experiences that make her stronger; she takes pride in her work and is completely dedicated to everything she does. Catherine is a model student and an enthusiastic learner.” 

 

 

 

During his first year as the starting quarterback for the Union College football team, Connor Eck played in all 10 games for the Dutchmen, recording 1,914 passing yards, 591 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns (17 passing, 4 rushing).  

 

Eck, a sophomore, was the motor of the Union offense this fall and there are high hopes for his next two years with the team. The 2011 Rye High graduate and State champion was named Honorable Mention for the Liberty League All-Star team.

 

Overall, the Dutchmen finished 6-4 under Coach John Audino and won six out of their last seven games to finish in second place in the Liberty League. The season culminated with a thrilling overtime victory against longtime rival RPI in the ‘Dutchmen Shoes’ game. Eck threw the game-winning touchdown pass on fourth and 16 to his favorite target, Kyle Reynolds.

 

Alex Rimmer, a member of the Class of 2013 at Hamilton College, broke the soccer team’s all-time scoring record last fall.

Rimmer is a 2009 graduate of Rye High School, where she scored the soccer team’s winning goal to take the State Championship title.

 

At Hamilton, Rimmer scored 37 goals in four seasons. She also moved into a tie for second place in total career points with 81.

 

Rimmer, an art major, plans to continue playing summer league soccer, competing against teams with national professional players every weekend.

 

 

  

 

The Rye Country Day School community was excited to play host to a National Letter of Intent signing ceremony for student Kate Sachs.

 

She planned to fence at Northwestern University on a partial scholarship.

 

She follows in the footsteps of her two older sisters, both of whom fenced at Northwestern for Head Coach Lawrence Dana Schiller.

 

A scholar-athlete, Sachs is a National Merit Commended Scholar and was named a U.S. Fencing Association All-American three times.
