En route to post-season action, Rye High and Rye Country Day are undefeated in League play. The crosstown rivals squared off in a non-league game on Saturday and the Garnets won the annual Mayor’s Cup, 13-6, at home.
Nick Franchella scored the first goal for RHS on an assist from Jack Hasselmann a minute into the game. The Wildcats’ Dylan Bass answered back five minutes later. Then, stunningly, Chris Santangelo put the Garnets back on top with a second left in the opening quarter.
Santangelo’s goal was a shot of adrenaline for his team, which became more aggressive and energized, capitalizing on almost every loose ball and faceoff. In the second quarter, the Garnets outscored the Wildcats 4-1 with four different players scoring.
During the third quarter, the Wildcats gained some momentum, scoring twice and only allowing the Garnets to score three times. But RHS came back to outscore Rye Country Day 4-2 in the final quarter.
Hasselmann led the Garnet offense with four goals and five assists. Cal Hynson had three goals and an assist. Coach Brian Dooley said the Garnet players made “some very nice unselfish goals and the defense played well in settled situations.”
By beating Byram Hills away on Tuesday and Harrison at home on Thursday, the Garnets won their league championship with a perfect record of 10-0. RHS is 13-2 overall, with one more non-league game before playoffs begin May 18.
Wildcats Coach Matt Rosolen singled out Bass for his “shooting prowess.”
Bass landed four goals for the Wildcats, while Tyler Miller chipped in the other two.
Co-captain Michael Farber made 12 saves in the goal.
Rye High topped Iona on Saturday, 12-7. Santangelo scored six goals in that win. Jack Korzelius chipped in another three goals.
Peter White had 16 saves for the Garnets on Saturday.
Rye’s offense moved the ball effectively and took control of the game with a four-goal outburst after halftime.
