Celebrating Pride, Extinguishing Prejudice

While promoting equity and inclusivity have no calendar bounds, June is PRIDE month, and The Town of Rye held two special events to mark the occasion. On June 2, students, advocates, and officials gathered at Crawford Park for a Pride Flag Raising and a Rainbow Crossing Reveal. An even greater number of people gathered at Rye Town Park on June 10 for a Pride Flag Raising, Parade, and unveiling of the Student Mural. Many stayed for the Pride Fair that followed.

Rye Town Supervisor Gary Zuckerman, who led the ceremony, was joined by many distinguished advocates — Congressman Jamaal Bowman, County Legislator Catherine Parker, Town of Rye Administrator Debbie Reisner, Rye Town Councilmember Pam Jaffee and fellow event Co-Chair Amanda Timchak, and activist and author Desmond Napoles, to name a few.

Parkgoers watched in joy and amazement as two of Anne Cubberly’s extraordinary puppets joined in the parade, and after the student mural was unveiled, hundreds paused to appreciate the message and the artistry.
