With returning star quality seniors Henry Bailey, Thomas Henderson, and Jabril Whiteside, along with freshman James McHugh, the Garnets are 8-2 so far this season. They played their first two matches on their home course, Rye Golf Club, and won both.
In their April 9 opener, they beat Byram Hills 208-218. Senior captain Bailey led the scoring with an even par 36. McHugh shot a 40 and both Henderson and Whiteside shot 41s. On April 11, they beat Blind Brook 208-267. Bailey and McHugh shot 39 and 40 respectively, Henderson shot 42, and Whiteside 43.
And last month, McHugh won the Boys Under 14 Division of the International Junior Golf Tour. The 36-hole event was at Bulle Rock in Havre de Grace, Maryland. McHugh fired rounds of 79 and 73 to defeat Gus Minkin of York, Pennsylvania by six strokes.
Rye was beaten by Fox Lane, 219-224, in an away match at Bedford Golf and Tennis Club. On Tuesday, McHugh shot a 39 in the team’s 208-222 win over Horace Greeley.
Coach Pat Romano said he’s depending on his “core four” — Bailey, Henderson, McHugh, and Whiteside — to lead the team. His main concern is “getting the five and six spots to step up.”
“It’s early in the season, and the boys are still in the process of finding their swings and their short game,” said the coach, “but I’m pleased with their play so far.”
