The Rye YMCA congratulated the winners of the second annual Distracted Walking poster contest at a community reception at the Rye library June 12. First place went to Payton Emery; second place to Laura Ann Pacos, and third place to Emma Futamura. All are students in the digital photography class at Rye High School.

 

The contest grew out of the Y’s Safe Routes to School initiative back in April 2010. Students were invited to create posters that illustrate the dangers of distracted walking.

 

This spring, under the leadership of Rye High School art teacher Andre Soto, 35 freshmen and one junior in two elective classes participated. The students narrowed the field to ten finalists, a process that led to thought-provoking discussion in the classroom about distracted walking. The Rye Y then convened a panel of community judges who selected the three winners.

 

All 36 posters will be exhibited at the Rye Free Reading Room through June 30.

 

At the event, Rye Y Executive Director Gregg Howells said, “We’re so pleased with the thoughtfulness and creativity that went into every poster. One of the goals of the Safe Routes to School Committee is to encourage kids to stay healthy by walking and to stay safe by remaining alert. This contest promotes both.”

 

Mr. Soto, who is new to the faculty, said he was delighted to teach so many talented and visionary young artists. “They are an inspiring group.”
