To the Editor:
I hope that the Rye City Manager and Council will look at Nursery Field as part of an overview of all of the field and recreational opportunities available for all of the people of Rye. I hope they will take the opportunity to reconsider whether this environmentally and historically sensitive spot is the right location for synthetic turf in Rye, in light of the opposition of virtually every local environmental and historic preservation non-profit.
We should be taking another look at the concerns raised by the medical experts from the Children’s Environmental Health Center at Mount Sinai, as well as the numerous other health and safety concerns raised by experts who are not affiliated with the Synthetic Turf Council.
And finally, I believe we really have to consider strongly if it is fiscally responsible to spend more taxpayer money to gain only the limited number of now scheduled field hours at Nursery Field that are rained out.
I am opposed to installing synthetic turf on Nursery Field. I believe a much less expensive and more environmentally friendly, natural grass renovation of Nursery Field is the most reasonable answer to all the above issues.
