Your Vote Matters

 

We urge everyone to vote on Tuesday, November 5. Three candidates are running for Rye City Council. Carolina Jaramillo Johnson (Independent) is a bilingual journalist, an active community volunteer, and a member of Rye’s Flood Commission. Richard Mecca (Republican) is a former small-business owner and a current City Council member who has long been engaged in Rye community affairs. Pam Tarlow (Democrat), is an attorney and former prosecutor. She has two daughters in Rye public schools and extensive professional experience in municipal management. Both the Democratic and Republican committees have endorsed all three candidates.

 

Why take the time to cast your vote if the candidates will win anyway? Because Carolina, Richard, and Pam, your neighbors, are volunteering for the unpaid position of City Council member. The City Council works extremely hard to make sound decisions on behalf of our community, ensuring that our tax dollars are wisely allocated so that City infrastructure is maintained, garbage gets collected, and fire/police departments keep us safe. If we are lucky, the job is done right, and every tax dollar is spent wisely.

 

Serving on the Council, which is the City’s legislative and policy-making body, entails great commitment to our community and requires attending numerous meetings of boards, commissions, and budget workshops in addition to the regular Council meetings. It means learning enough about a wide range of esoteric issues to make good decisions. It also means listening to us — all Rye residents — to understand what we want prioritized and being responsive and patient when reasonable minds differ. Carolina, Richard, and Pam are planning to make a huge gift of their time and effort for the good of our community. On Tuesday, November 5, please show your appreciation by giving them your vote of confidence.
