Taylor Love and Ryan Rogers closed out 2011 by winning the year’s final two Lions Club Athlete of the Month awards.

Love, a varsity track star for the Garnets since 2008, earned November’s honor for his brilliance in cross country. The senior won the League and County, and then finished second in the Section. He came in 13th at the Federation State Meet, and also placed top-20 all-time for Section 1 cross country.

 

“It means a great deal to me to win the award,” said Love. “I’m extremely honored to be classified among the premier athletes in the Section, and it provides me with further motivation to do even better.”

 

In the classroom, Love is equally adept. A High Honor Roll student who boasts a 95% average, Love has taken AP courses in world history, language and composition, U.S. history, economics, calculus, environmental science, Latin, and chemistry.

 

His list of extracurricular activities is also impressive, ranging from participation in jazz band and wind ensemble, to membership in Model UN, Student Council, and Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse. He also raised money to provide families in Africa with nets to prevent malaria, and founded the Rye Presbyterian Flamingo Club, which aids HIV-positive orphans in Africa. He is a member of the Rye Presbyterian Youth Group, plays Ultimate Frisbee, and is a swing dance enthusiast.

 

Love joined several mission trips, traveling as far as Haiti to help those in need. He teaches Sunday School as well.

 

Recruited for both cross country and track, Love will attend Bowdoin College in the fall.

 

Rogers, a four-year star for the varsity hockey team, was selected as December’s Athlete of the Month. Led by their senior captain, the Garnets are off to a blistering 7-0-1 start and appear to be serious Section title contenders.

 

“It’s an honor to continue the tradition of winning this award,” said Rogers. “My brother Marshall won it some years ago, and I’m hoping to keep up the good work and take the Section 1 crown.”

 

Since starting on the first line as a freshman, Rogers has increased his offensive output by at least ten points each year, finishing with 30-plus in 2010-11, when he earned All-League distinction.

 

Rogers is a Honor Roll student with a 91% average, and has taken AP courses in psychology and economics, as well as Honors classes in Spanish, global, and U.S. History. In 2010, he won the English Departmental Award.

 

Outside of school, he has volunteered as both a hockey and soccer coach, and was a volunteer aide twice at the Jarden Westchester Triathlon. He works at Carpet Trends as an assistant installer.

Rogers plans on attending University of Vermont in the fall.
