A Homily of Hope

 

His Eminence Timothy Michael Dolan was supposed to speak at Resurrection Church earlier this year, but he was called to a higher purpose by Rome that week: the election of a new pope.

 

Parishioners flocked to Resurrection September 29 for the rescheduled Women’s Interfaith Committee Prayer Service over which His Eminence presided. With his signature humor, Cardinal Dolan said, “I didn’t win.” The entire congregation broke out in laughter.

 

The congregation was larger and more diverse than usual that afternoon because the Interfaith Service is one to which members of Rye’s synagogue and other churches are invited and warmly welcomed.

 

Cardinal Dolan spoke not only about the newest Pope, but also about his two predecessors, and their messages. “Each of them was the right person at the right time in history,” he noted.

 

He went on to describe John Paul II as “the Pope of the Soul,” Pope Benedict as “the Pope of the Head,” and Pope Francis as “the Pope of the Heart on steroids — buckle your seatbelt.”

The Beaux Arts Have It

 

The 61^st Annual Beaux Arts Exhibition opened at the Rye library October 5. Over 80 pieces were submitted for the juried show, which attracted artists in every media. The judges were Dr. Thomas Halsall, Professor Emeritus of Visual Arts at Westchester Community College, Richard Janniello, founder and owner of Ciro Photography, and Belinda Roth, Interim Executive Director of the Katonah Museum of Art. 

 

There were winners in every category:

Funds from the show, which is sponsored by the Woman’s Club of Rye, help provide a scholarship to a graduating Rye High School senior who wishes to pursue the study of art in higher education.

 

The event was chaired by Melanie Ciraco and Kay Klein with lots of brushstrokes from Barbara Bianco, Agnes Brady and Peggy Feeley (Executive Committee); Barbara Doetsch (Publicity); Janet Meyers (Program); Kathleen Cusano, Suzanne French, Dolores Martin, and Emily Saunders (Refreshments); and Freda Smith (Floral Arrangements).

 

The exhibit will be on view in the Rye Free Reading Room’s Community Room until October 24.
