WHAT A CATCH

Connor Owen, a fifth grader at Midland and an avid fisherman, landed a “monster” 100-pound, 95-inch Atlantic sailfish while on spring break in Cancun, Mexico.

He and his dad David were four and a half hours into an offshore fishing trip, and ready to head back in and go bottom fishing, when wham, a sailfish took the bait.

Connor was on the rod and fought the fish for about 30 minutes, until he landed his prize sailfish. In Cancun waters, sailfish are typically around 60 inches.

Embracing the Varieties of Religious Experience

Sixth graders in Church of the Resurrection’s Parish Religious Education Program (known to Catholics over 40 as CCD) were treated to a Seder dinner on March 20.

The event came about after Monsignor Dwyer stopped by Christine Anderson’s class as they were discussing the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt. After discovering that none of the children had ever attended a Seder, he decided to plan one in anticipation of Holy Week.

Along with Christine Anderson, teachers Pilar Bustamante, Marie Pope, and Anna Loguidice served the 45 students hard-boiled eggs, parsley, matzo, and grape juice. Joe Viserta led the children in singing Psalms and accompanied them on piano. Monsignor Dwyer officiated the prayers and explained the symbolic meaning of the meal.

The teachers are hopeful the event will help solidify what the children are learning about the Old Testament. The Seder enables them to see the historic connection between Christians and Jews and realize Jesus’ Last Supper was a Passover meal that he shared with his apostles just before his Passion.

Rising in the Ranks

At Rye Boy Scout Troop 2’s Winter Court of Honor, eight rank advancements were recognized and 15 merit badges were awarded. Additionally, Sean Howard received an Eagle Bronze Palm in recognition of his completion of five merit badges after achieving the rank of Eagle. Jeffrey Pickup was elected to the Order of the Arrow, scouting’s national honor society.

The action continues with the annual Blue and Gold Cub Scout banquet run by Troop 2 as a fundraiser to defray camp and trip costs for scouts in need. A hike along the Riga Plateau portion of the Appalachian Trail in Connecticut is planned for April 13-14. And, preparations continue for this summer’s trips to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, the national jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia, and two weeks of summer camp in the Adirondacks at the Westchester-Putnam Council’s Camp Read.
