They walk, they amble, they trot, and they race with grace and gusto. Rye Recreation’s annual Turkey Trot and Paws Run, held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, brings out the best of smiles and miles.
All went according to plan on November 25.
The first pup to cross the Paws Run finish line knew who was top dog, and appreciated the special pat on the head and the well-deserved slice of turkey that night.
The Fun Run, which started right afterwards, was a sea of happy families. No ribbons or trophies are handed out; participating is its own reward.
Competition comes with the 3.1- and 5.2-mile races.
The top three female finishers in the 3.1-mile were Kerry Grundulgh (with a time of 21:19), Ruth O’Driscoll (21:37), and Amelie Goacher (22:44).
The top three male finishers were Vincent Mandracchi (18:08), Joseph Tapia (19:15), and Clayton Stark (19:36).
In the 5.2-Mile race, Sam O’Driscoll (30:11), Peter Gardner (30:58), and David Marks (33:04) were the top three males. Betsy Burke (30:47), Michelle Rorke (33:09), and Sarah Wells (34:08) led the women’s field.
The runner to watch is 10-year-old Mackey Reuter, who finished seventh among males in the 3.1-mile.
Of course, turkeys can run at speeds of up to 25 miles an hour, leaving us amateurs in the dust.
