Dr. Jacqueline Putting

Jacqueline Louise Putting, M.D. passed away September 27 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She was 92.

 

Born in Paris to Marcel and Suzanne (Poisson) Genin, she graduated from the Medical School of University of Paris in 1947. For over 20 years, she was an ophthalmologist on the teaching staff at the New York University School of Medicine. She also held a Master Herbalist degree and, after retiring in 1997, continued her alternative medicine practice until 2008.

 

She was married to Elux Putting, who predeceased her. They had four daughters. For nearly 50 years, Dr. Putting lived in Rye, where she raised her children and eldest grandchild.

 

For over a decade she was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Mamaroneck.

 

Dr. Putting was keenly interested in everyone she encountered and loved to bring wellness to people. She was intelligent, charming, dynamic, and special, with an inspiringly generous heart. She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.

 

She is survived by three daughters: Francoise (Steven) Blitch of Piedmont, Calif., Benedicte Putting of Heemstede, Holland, and Anna (Bazyl) Zawierucha of Bethlehem, Penn. Her daughter Nanette Becker predeceased her. Dr. Putting is survived by nine grandchildren.

 

Graveside services are scheduled for Saturday, October 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Greenwood Union Cemetery in Rye.

 

Arrangements are being handled by Schisler Funeral Home, 2119 Washington Avenue, Northampton, PA. 18067.

Jack Kofoed

Jack Frank Kofoed died June 14 in Lanconia, New Hampshire, shortly before his 86th birthday.

Born in Pelham on June 24, 1926, he graduated from Pelham High School, Class of 1942. He went on to Middlebury College from which he graduated in 1946. Mr. Kofoed served in the U.S. Navy and the Naval Reserve.

He met and married Joan Dannehower in December 1950 and soon after moved to Rye, where they raised a family and maintained a home until 1999. Mr. Kofoed was an active member of Christ’s Church, serving on the vestry and teaching Sunday school for many years. He and his wife were also longstanding members of Manursing Island Club.

In 1975, they moved to Easton, Pennsylvania. Upon his retirement in 1982, they relocated to Center Harbour, New Hampshire, then later to Wolfeboro, N.H., where he became an active member of All Saint’s Episcopal Church.

Mr. Kofoed started his career with Young & Rubicam, and went on to General Foods Corp., Diamond Crystal Salt, Venus Paradise Pencil, and Papercraft. He retired from Binney & Smith, after serving as Executive Vice President and then Chief Operating Officer.

He was very proud of the Dream-Makers national Art Education and Crayola Creativity programs, which he continued to provide help for and promote until the very last few years of his life.

In addition to his children, Peter, William, and Catherine, Mr. Kofoed is survived by five grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at Christ’s Church in Rye October 20 at 11 a.m.

Madelyn Groton

Madelyn DeRose Groton of Westwood, Massachusetts, and formerly of Rye, died September 11 of melanoma. She was 52.

 

Born to James and Barbara DeRose, December 23, 1959 in Huntington, New York, she grew up in Rye. After graduating from Rye High School in 1978, she attended Hartwick College. She received a Master’s in Education from Manhattanville College.

 

Mrs. Groton was an elementary school teacher at Greenwich Country Day, Meadowbrook, and Westwood Elementary schools. She also served as an Assistant Librarian at the Westwood Islington Branch Library.

 

She will be remembered for her devotion to her family, incredible love of life, and athletic prowess.  

 

In addition to Calvert Groton Jr., her beloved husband of 24 years, she is survived by her four children: Teddy, Betsy, Kate, and Abby. She is also survived by her father, James DeRose of Ponte Vedra, Florida; and her siblings: Paul (Agnes) DeRose of Naperville, Illinois, Jimmy (Helen) DeRose of Ponte Vedra, Leslie (Mike) Welhoelter of Rye, and Kris O’Shea (Walt) of Ponte Vedra. Her mother predeceased her.

Florence M. Howard

Florence M. Howard of Vashon Island, Washington, and formerly of Rye, died peacefully on September 14 after a lengthy illness. She was 93.

 

Born Florence Quist in Irwin City, California, she earned a degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley.

 

She married Edwin L. Howard of Davis, California, in 1947. Four years later they settled in Rye, where they raised their five children.

 

Upon his retirement in 1977, they moved first to Davis, California, and then to the nearby town of Winters, where they built a home. They were members of the Pioneer Presbyterian Church, where Mrs. Howard served as deacon, and volunteered her time to aid local “shut-ins”.

 

After her husband’s death in 1988, she continued to call Winters home. In 1999, she moved to Vashon to be closer to two of her children.

 

Those who were fortunate enough to have known Florence Howard will forever remember her warmth, kindness, modesty, and selfless dedication to others.

 

She is survived by her five children: Anne C. Cotton, Walter Q. Howard, Jane O. Howard, Roger D. Howard, and Edwin L. (“Edson”) Howard Jr., as well as 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

 

Remembrances may be sent to Vashon Community Care Center, Vashon, Wash., where Mrs. Howard received superior care and love from the Skilled Nursing staff during her illness.

 

A Celebration of Life is planned for next summer, in California.
