John Casey

John Patrick Casey died December 5 at Greenwich Hospital, surrounded by family and friends. He was 66.

 

Born June 5, 1945 in New York City, he was raised on the Upper West Side. He and his brother, Roger, were Irish step-dancing champions in their youth. The quintessential, fun-loving Irishman was known for his upbeat and gregarious personality and beloved by friends from all walks of life.
Mr. Casey graduated from Baruch College and went on to become CFO of B. Altman and Co. At the time of his death, he was CFO of the Altman Foundation.

 

He and his wife Kathy raised their family in Rye and lived there for 20 years before moving to Rye Brook in 2001. Mr. Casey was an enthusiastic and dedicated Commissioner of Rye Little League. A popular member of Westchester Country Club, he excelled on the golf course with his unorthodox, but effective, swing. He also belonged to the Rye Fish and Game Club and was a revered member of the legendary “PotatoeHeads”.

 

A longtime member of the Union League Club, he served as president for three years, and was on the ULC Trap and Skeet Team. He was also a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and Lincoln Hall and a proud veteran of the Army’s “Fighting 69th”. He served previously on the boards of St. Agnes Hospital and LaSalle Academy.

 

In addition to his devoted wife of 38 years, Kathy, Mr. Casey is survived by his daughter Erin and her husband Brian Appleton; his son Sean; his beloved grandson Reed; and his brother Roger and his family: Gail, Carolyn, Andrew, Maggie, Nora, and Kevin.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial WAS held Friday, December 9 at Church of the Resurrection.

John Egan

 

John J. Egan of New Rochelle, formerly of Rye, passed away December 1, at the age of 87.

 

He was born September 7, 1924, to Francis and Catherine (Crotty) Egan, in the Bronx, where he grew up with his brothers, Francis and Thomas.

He graduated from All Hallows High School and St. John’s University.

 

During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Signal Corp in the Philippines. Upon his discharge from the Army, he joined the NYPD where he served with distinction as a detective sergeant for 27 years. He was honored by the Detectives Crime Clinic as Policeman of the Month in 1968.

 

In 1950 he married Patricia Cowan, who remained the love of his life for 61 wonderful years.

After his retirement from the NYPD, Mr. Egan served for many years as a director of security for Pepsi Cola Bottling Company.  

 

Mr. Egan was a faithful parishioner of Resurrection Church and a longtime member of Coveleigh Club.

 

“My dad was a selfless man of love, faith, and integrity, who loved his family above all else,” said his son Jack. “He thoroughly enjoyed and cherished the great times he and my mom had at Coveleigh, where he was a member for 42 years. A loyal and giving friend to the many people he touched over the years, he will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.”

 

In addition to his wife Patricia, Mr. Egan is survived by his three children, Betty Ann Lecky and her husband Robert; John Jr. and his wife Lorrie, and James and his wife Marianne; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

 

A funeral mass was celebrated December 5 at Church of the Resurrection.

Herbert Jamison Jr.

 

Herbert L. Jamison Jr. died peacefully in his sleep, after a long illness, at Greenwich Hospital December 2.

 

Born November 18, 1924 in New York City, he spent most of his life in Rye and Vero Beach, Florida.

 

A graduate of Edgemont School in Scarsdale and Stony Brook School in Long Island, Mr. Jamison received an M.B.A. in Insurance from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was president of the M.B.A. club.

After serving as an officer in the Naval Reserves in the South Pacific during World War II, he completed his studies at Wesleyan University, earning an honors degree in Economics in 1947.

 

In 1949, he joined Herbert L. Jamison & Co, the insurance brokerage founded by his father in 1938, spearheading the company’s group and pension divisions. He went on to receive his Chartered Life Underwriter designation in 1952, and eight years later took over as Managing Partner of the firm. After developing the company into one of the largest and most respected independent brokerages in the industry, Mr. Jamison retired in 1992.

 

Outside of work, he volunteered his time and talents to a wide array of organizations. A Life Member of American Yacht Club, he served as Commodore and Trustee, while compiling a successful competitive sailing record. While in office, he instituted a ‘more dynamic approach’ to better serve the membership and improved budget controls that are still in place.

 

Mr. Jamison served as Governor of Apawamis Club, Governor and President of The Union League Club of New York City, and Director of the National Association of Insurance Brokers. He was a founding member of the Rye Arts Center. He also taught Sunday school at Rye Presbyterian Church and served as Deacon and Trustee. He was a trustee of The Osborn for a decade and head of the insurance committee.

 

In 1977, Mr. Jamison was unanimously appointed to fill a seat on the Rye City Council. He also served on the Planning Commission, Board of Assessment Review, and Retirement Plan Study Committee.

 

An avid sailor all his life, Mr. Jamison enjoyed tennis, paddle tennis, swimming, and golf.

 

Mr. Jamison was a role model to his family and enjoyed socializing with friends. He will be missed by all.

 

In addition to his loving wife of 64 years, Cristine Walker Jamison, he is survived by his two sons, Herbert L. Jamison III and his wife Barbara, and Mark R. Jamison and his wife Beth; his grandchildren, Jessica, Lauren, Jeffrey, Cristy, and Walker; a step-grandson Kyle Ranson; his sister, Grace Wellever; and his brother Richard. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Eileen Reynolds.

 

A Memorial service WAS held at Rye Presbyterian Church December 14. Donations in Mr. Jamison’s memory may be made to Rye Presbyterian Church.

 

 

Evelyn Menendez

 

Evelyn E. (Neuss) Menendez, 90, a former and longtime resident of Rye, died peacefully November 30 at her home in Norton, Massachusetts, under the care of her daughter.

 

Born November 6, 1921 to William and Florence (Heil) Neuss, and raised in Queens, she graduated from Newtown High School and later enrolled at the Fashion Design School in New York. Her first job was with Butterick Patterns.

 

After marrying Rene Menendez in 1943, the couple moved to Rye.

 

Mrs. Menendez worked as a secretary for the Rye City School District for 20 years, until her retirement in 1983. She remained involved in school activities after her retirement, in addition to being an active member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and the Rye Seniors. She also enjoyed sewing, needlework, and crafts.

 

She and her husband of 66 years traveled extensively during their retirement. A sweet and quiet person who helped to raise her sister, Mrs. Menendez was devoted to building her life around family and friends and helping others.

 

In 2005, she and her husband moved to Norton to be near their daughter. Her husband, who was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, predeceased her.

 

Mrs. Menendez is survived by her daughter, Janet Antonopoulos and her husband Dimitrios of Norton; a sister, Lois DeMarco and her husband Vincent of Kent, Conn.; and a granddaughter, Heather Kelly, also of Norton.
