With the opening of Zona Fresca on Purchase Street the week after Thanksgiving, burrito and taco lovers are in for a treat. The Mexican grill, whose motto is “serving not your everyday Mexican food, but Mexican food you can eat everyday,” promises fresh and healthy ingredients, top-notch service, and an affordable menu.
Owner Robert J. Luiso is the first to bring this casual, fast-service South Florida eatery to New York. The franchise is opening its doors in the middle of town in Cosi’s old location, where General Manager Jose Arias feels right at home.
Having managed at Cosi, the coffee/flatbread chain for 17 years, he is thrilled about having a hand in reinventing the space. “So many customers know me, it feels like family,” said Arias, who insists Zona Fresca is not your typical Mexican chain. “I know people in Rye look for a fresh, healthy experience and it’s a pleasure to introduce something brand new here.”
Luiso likes to say this location is modeled after the Florida flagship with a little New York flair. The space has been brightly renovated with vibrant colors, stone tiles, wood flooring, and a digital menu. A spice bar in the corner will offer mild and spicy sauces and fresh vegetables to accompany any selection.
The menu is divided into burritos, tacos, salads, and Mexican favorites, from quesadillas to build-your-own nachos. Head Chef Alex Grumer’s homemade dishes include charbroiled chicken, steak, and grouper or shrimp burritos. All of them are made to order and may be customized with various toppings, such as beans, cheese, guacamole, and pico de gallo without an up-charge. All menu items include fresh chips. Zona Fresca also offers a kids’ menu. Mexi-brews and Gringo beers are available, too.
“Soon, people will be smelling fresh food cooking all day long,” said Arias.
Zona Fresca will be open every day for lunch and dinner from 11-9.
