Patricia Rogers Schoen Gile

She married David Gile in 1949. In 1964, the Gile family moved from Pittsburgh to Rye.

At age 40, Mrs. Gile graduated from Goddard College in Vermont with a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology. She then began graduate studies at the NYU School of Social Work, and in field placements worked with offenders on probation and children with developmental disabilities. After a hiatus, she transferred to the U. Conn. School of Social Work, from which she earned an M.S.W. in 1975.

Mrs. Gile was a deeply spiritual, non-judgmental, and kind person with many interests, hobbies, and friends. She was an accomplished knitter (mainly scarves); played the accordion (which she called her “Stomach Steinway”), organ, and piano; and enjoyed reading, tracking full moons on her beloved Phillips Brooks calendars, and visiting older people.

Her family said, “Patsy had a talent for mimicking birdcalls, and could quiet a room with a sharp whistle without the use of fingers. She also had a delightful sense of humor, and was a beloved and generous mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law.”

The Giles had a long and happy marriage. He died in 2007. Their daughter, Nancy Gile Gehlke, died in 2002.

Mrs. Gile leaves two sons, David Gile Jr. of Snellville, Georgia, and Larry Gile and his wife Betsy (Roberts) of Brooklyn and their two daughters, Kathryn Gile and Lily Gile; and two grandsons, Joshua and David Gehlk, who live in Provence, France.

A funeral service was held at Rye Presbyterian Church on July 10, 2017.

Donations in Mrs. Gile’s memory may be made to: Chatham Hall School, 800 Chatham Hall Circle, Chatham, Virginia 24531.
