Margaret Hamilton Steers, a lifelong resident of Rye, N.Y., died peacefully on January 20, 2020, surrounded by her loving family. She was 92.
Born on February 25, 1927, in New York City, she was the daughter of Angelina (Chamberlin) and Macaulay Hamilton. Peggy was educated at Rye Country Day School and the Westover School.
She had a long connection with various horticultural and charitable organizations. She was a member of the Garden Club of America and an honorary member of The Rye Garden Club. One of the founders and vice-chairwoman of the former Westchester Classic golf tournament, she was also past president of the Twig Organization of United Hospital in Port Chester, N.Y. She served on the Board of Managers and Board of Trustees of United Hospital, and as president of the Board of Managers of the Osborn Retirement Community. She was a longtime member of Apawamis Club, American Yacht Club, the Onteora Club, and the National Society of Colonial Dames.
An avid sportswoman, Mrs. Steers was a competitive tennis and paddle tennis player as well as golfer. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her extended family and many friends in Rye and at her second home in Tannersville, N. Y.
She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Charles R.C. Steers Jr. She is survived by her three sons, Charles R.C. Steers III, Robert Hamilton Steers (Lauren Smith), and William Macy Steers (Nancy Wilkinson), all of whom live in Rye, as well as her thirteen grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
“With our mother’s passing, it is the end of an era,” said her sons. “She cared deeply about the community, her heritage, her family, and her friends.”
A memorial service will be held at Christ’s Church in Rye on Saturday, January 25 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private.
