RCDS GIRLS’ SOCCER: Underdog Wildcats Stun Their FAA Opponents

Two days after upsetting top-seeded Greenwich Academy in the Fairchester Athletic Association semifinal November 11, the fifth-seeded Rye Country Day girls won the FAA championship title by beating second-seed St. Luke’s 1-0 in overtime.

After a scoreless regulation game, the Wildcats’ senior co-captain Charlotte Boehning scored the winning goal on a corner assisted by fellow senior co-captain Sam Kost with 1:16 left in the first 10- minute overtime. Neither team scored in the second 10-minute overtime, so the victory belonged to Rye Country Day. And the victory was especially sweet because while the Wildcats made it to the finals in 2013, the last time they brought home the FAA trophy was in 2000.

Coach Alin Andrei was over the moon. “They fought for every ball on the field, creating opportunities to score and defending as a team.” Reflecting on the season, Andrei added, “Soccer is unpredictable. We were prepared for every game, but with all of our big injuries we had to keep changing the lineup and our tactics.”
