In their last home game of the season, which fell on Senior Night, October 17 the Garnets hosted Mamaroneck to whom they lost three sets in a row: 25-19, 25-14, and 25-19. The team played very well in the last set, achieving long volleys and perfectly executed digs and kills, but they could not dig themselves out of the 2-0 hole. The loss, which brought their record to 6-10, may have cost the Garnets a spot in the playoffs.

Captain Sammy Viger said the Mamaroneck matchup was “very disappointing.” Coach Melanie Flowers added, “The loss was a good wake-up call for us. We beat Mamaroneck last year, but they’ve come back strong this season. Our team has to understand that we can’t take any opponent for granted.”

Two players Viger has high praise for are junior Ali Imam and sophomore Jaime Donnelly. “Imam really stepped up her game this year. Her kills and awesome serves helped the team in numerous situations. Jaime is big at the net, a great hitter and blocker.”

In their home win against Eastchester last month, the Garnets went to five sets. “We stepped up to the plate and outlasted them with energy to spare. It was such an important win,” said Viger.

At the Senior Night ceremonies, Coach Flowers gave each of the three seniors a word to describe their school volleyball career. For Jaime DiDonatto, the word was “perseverance,” for Jen Verille “composure,” and for Sammy Viger it was “humility.”

The Garnets beat Riverside 3-0 October 21.
