Rye Middle School Squash players braved blizzard Jonas the weekend of January 22 to compete in the 2016 U.S. Middle School Team Squash Championships at Yale. RMS not only beat the storm but placed sixth in the Boys II division standings with a 3-2 tournament record and 15 individual match wins.

Five members of the club team competed in the tournament as a co-ed group: Captain Sarah Hodulik, Dylan Rodilosso, Cooper Vanneck, co-Captain Olivia Dabinett, and Clare Cassidy. Among the 27 teams were three Boys’ divisions and two Girls’ divisions.

In the first round, RMS faced tough opponents from CitySquash Boys A and lost 4-1. Rodilosso was the sole winner at No. 4, cruising through his match 11-4, 11-7, 11-4 against Roberto Cruz. Rodilosso didn’t stop there; he was undefeated in the tournament, earned a place in top 15 Player Leaders, and placed sixth overall in winning percentages.

After the first round, Rye went on to a consolation round-robin, and had a pair of victories over CitySquash Boys B (4-1) and East Rock (4-1) before a default by St. Luke’s Middle School Boys.

The squash season for the 24 RMS seventh- and eighth-grade players will come to a close with the third and final jamboree of the Fairwest Public School Squash League this month at Chelsea Piers in Stamford.
