The Rye Middle School Girls’ Squash team won the Division II title in the U.S. Squash Middle School Nationals held in Philadelphia Jan. 26 to 28.
Three teams from the middle school participated in the national competition: the girls’ team, the boys’ team, and the co-ed squad.
The Rye Squash Club is a parent-run organization that began around 2008 with a boys team only. Then a co-ed team was added. The girls’ team is in its first year, and its win at this level was a surprise for all involved.
Girls’ Coach Lume Landman said, “It’s been an absolute pleasure to coach a team of players who are all dedicated and hardworking.”
This year 50 RMS students signed up to play and were divided into groups to train at the The Apawamis Club, Westchester Country Club, and Lifetime Fitness. Over the winter they have competed as part of the FairWest League — an association of schools across Westchester and Fairfield counties. With the combination of talent and excitement on the team, the club decided send three teams to the Arlen Specter U.S. Squash Center to test their skills.
