Spring is usually a happy season for Rye High senior Alexis Hios. In spring 2011, she earned a trip to the State golf championships as a freshman, placing 33rd overall. The next spring she was back, finishing in the top dozen. A year ago, she was the New York State runner-up and her Garnets were League champs.

This spring? Well, she’s already won the Rye Lions Club’s Athlete of the Month for April. As Captain of the Garnets’ girls’ golf squad, Alexis will join the other monthly honorees at an awards dinner at The Osborn in June.

In November, Hios accepted a scholarship to play Division 1 golf next fall for the Towson University Tigers.  But before that, there’s still a little matter of leading the Garnets to the league title and returning to States. The team’s two-year winning streak was halted recently by another undefeated power, Ursuline, despite her best efforts (she won overall by three strokes with a 39).

Still, things look bright for the team as long as Hios is out on the course. How does Coach Rich Savage like having the top-ranked golfer in Section One on his team? “It feels pretty terrific,” he said.
When she’s not out on the links, Hios is a strong performer in the classroom. An Honor Roll student her first three years, she’s upped her game recently, landing on the  High Honor Roll the last two quarters. With AP courses in Biology and Psychology and departmental awards in English and History, it’s clear this is one golfer with more going for her than a pretty backswing.

A violinist in orchestra — Hios was inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society in 2013 — she has volunteered at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk for the past four years.

Back on the greensward, Hios was Section One champ in 2013 before winning the NYS Girls Junior Amateur title and the Met PGA Match Play Championship in the summer. Her thoughts, though, weren’t on individual achievements as she approached graduation. “It’s been exciting to see how the team has grown over the years and I am so proud to have been a part such a great group of girls. It’s an honor to be named a Lion’s Club Athlete and I can’t imagine a better way to top off my high school career.”
