It is a sad fact that there are millions of wonderful dogs and puppies living in shelters, desperately hoping to be adopted.

 

It is a sad fact that there are millions of wonderful dogs and puppies living in shelters, desperately hoping to be adopted. Many of these dogs live in parts of the country where they are placed in “high-kill” shelters, where they often have only three days to find a home or are put down because of overcrowding.    

 

But here in Rye lots of families are doing their part to rescue dogs by opening up their hearts and homes, one dog at a time. And it’s making a big difference.

 

Thus begins “Rye Rescues,” a series featuring some of the wonderful families who have rescued dogs and have tons of love to show for it. Giving back never felt so warm and fuzzy! 

 

How did you find your dog?

 

We have two dogs. We adopted Nutmeg (“Meggie”) through Pet Rescue. Roscoe, our second, was adopted through a rescue organization that my sister found. She adopted Roscoe’s brother, Oscar. 

 

What was it that made you think he/she was the right fit for your family?

 

We visited Meggie at her foster home and she was very sweet. We loved her immediately. Roscoe was a young puppy that came up on a truck from South Carolina.

 

What made you decide to rescue?

 

My mom always had strays/rescue animals growing up and we heard the stories about how much she loved them. We thought it would be great to give a homeless animal a home. We also have a rescue cat that we love (although she’s very fat). 

 

How old is your dog?

 

Meggie is about 5. Roscoe is 1.

 

What made you decide on older or puppy?

 

We didn’t think about the age. We were more interested in whether the dog would fit in with our family.

 

What parts of Rye does your dog like the most?

 

The beach and the food cabinet.

 

Can you tell us some funny things your dog does?

 

Roscoe chews on Meggie’s ears when he has nothing better to do. 

 

When Meggie is hungry, she shoves the food bowl into the kitchen with her nose and glares at us.

 

On the command of “Bug!” Meggie will roll over and lie on her back, feet straight up in the air, like a dead bug!
