Rye Squash Teams Hold Court at Squash Nationals

Rye Country Day Boys’ brought home a finalist trophy, Rye High School Boys’ claimed a pair of Classic Plate victories, and Rye High School Girls’ won the consolation playoffs in the 2016 U.S. High School Team Squash Championships in Philadelphia last weekend.

Rye Country Day Boys’ brought home a finalist trophy, Rye High School Boys’ claimed a pair of Classic Plate victories, and Rye High School Girls’ won the consolation playoffs in the 2016 U.S. High School Team Squash Championships in Philadelphia last weekend. The largest tournament in the world, the event drew over 1,500 players on 172 teams from 14 states hosted by six venues. There were seven divisions for boys and five for girls.

In Boys’ Division III, Rye Country Day was on a roll, defeating Haverford, Westminster (CT), and Choate Rosemary Hall before coming up short in the finals to SCH Boys’ Varsity B from Philadelphia, 6-1. Rye Country Day Girls’, competing in the challenging Division I, won the Plate 1 draw, defeating Germantown Friends School 5-2.

In Division IV, Rye High School Boys’ A survived several nail-biting matches and ended up in the Classic Plate finals, where they defeated Bronxville 5-2. RHS Boys’ B won the Classic Plate in Division VI defeating Canterbury 4-3. “The team surpassed expectations and impressed everyone with their performance and play,” said Coach Muhammad Ali.

Rye High School Girls’ 1, competing in Division II, won the consolation playoff, defeating St. Paul’s School, 5-2. In Division IV, RHS Girls’ 2 defeated Miss Porter’s, 4-3, to reach the consolation finals before succumbing to the Hill School 4-2.
