Rye High School’s boys varsity hockey team fought its way into the semifinals of the Section 1 region’s Division 2 playoffs this year, but the Garnets’ season ended there in a hard-fought battle against Pelham Memorial High on Feb. 22.
The Pelicans took an early lead, scoring with 13:40 remain-ing in the opening period. Rye then had a chance on a power play, with a penalty called on Pelham for holding, but the momentum shifted when Rye was penalized as well. Pelham scored, again, during four-on-four play, taking a 2-0 lead into the second period.
Despite Rye’s valiant efforts, Pelham dominated the shot count, with 24 shots on goal compared to the Garnets’ 11 by the end of the second period. And a quick Pelham goal late in that period stretched their lead to 3-0.
Rye rallied in the third period, however, displaying remarkable aggression on offense. Senior Seth Dorfman’s early goal gave the Garnets hope, and with time ticking away and Rye still trailing, a penalty on Pelham offered the team an opportunity. A strategic timeout was called to rally the team for a final push.
In an attempt to level the score, Rye pulled its sophomore goalie Owen Fitzgibbons – who had made an impressive 28 saves during the game – to intensify their offensive onslaught. But Pelham’s defense held firm: The final shots on goal total favored Pelham, 31-24, and its victory was sealed at 3-1.
Dorfman’s goal, assisted by seniors Lucas Tsuchida and Tommy Broderick, showcased Rye’s determination to fight until the very end. Despite falling short, Rye’s performance was a significant improvement from a previous defeat to Pelham early in the season, with the Garnets displaying newfound aggression and resilience.
