Science Is in the Air at Midland School

The energy was electric the evening of June 2 as 109 fourth and fifth graders participated in the first annual Midland Science Fair. The student scientists were invited to design, test, analyze and present their projects using scientific methods to solve a problem. The children conducted a wide range of experiments and shared them with parents and staff to rave reviews. The next day, the student scientists shared their experiments with the entire Midland student body.

Fifth grade teachers Marie Brennan and Julie Vinci coordinated the Science Fair. Students were given project guidelines, as well as sample projects to spark their imaginations. Brennan and Vinci were also available for consultations to assist the students in developing their hypotheses and planning their projects.

The project names were as dazzling as the experiments themselves: The Dry Ice Bubble Project, Blobs in a Bottle, Dazzling Diapers, Jiggling Jellies, Egg Laying Contest, and Capillary Action on Fruits and Vegetables.

Many thanks to parent co-chairs Patty Surak and Carrie Donahue, and congratulations to all the Midland scientists!
