Bo Curry has organized a community service project for the Rye Country Day tennis team, collecting used racquets and balls from local tennis clubs/facilities and donating/delivering them to New York Junior Tennis & Learning (NYJTL). The nonprofit organization is dedicated to transforming young inner city lives through tennis. It is an outgrowth of the National Junior Tennis League, which was founded by Gene Scott (an early tennis mentor of Bo’s) with Arthur Ashe, Charlie Pasarell, and other pros.
Bo and his teammates dropped off bins for racquets and balls at a number of clubs, including Westchester, Manursing, Apawamis, Coveleigh, Century, Old Oaks, and Willow Ridge. Last weekend, they collected 200 balls out of the gate at Willow Ridge.
“We hope that anyone who has a used racquet will drop it off soon in one of the club bins,” said Bo.
NYJTL is the largest tennis and education-themed community organization in the country and currently offers programs on and off the court to 75,000 New York City youth ages 6-8. The organization is currently building a tennis facility, the Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning in Crotona Park in the Bronx.
