Wiz Kids Quiz 

 

The Rye Youth Council is hosting Trivia Night on Sunday at 4:30 on Zoom. Teams can be composed of individuals, friends, or families. Prizes from local merchants will be awarded to the winner of each round. 

 

Tickets are $30 at ryeyouthcouncil.org. Proceeds will help RYC continue to offer free programs and services that build community and empower children, teens, and young adults.

Social Butterflies   

 

The Rye Arts Center and The Rotary Club of Rye are pleased to co-sponsor Rye’sAbovean uplifting community event, public art project, and fundraiser. Participating artists will transform aluminum and steel sculptures into original works of art – butterflieswhich will be displayed in downtown Rye throughout summer and be auctioned in the fall. Deadline for artist applications is March 15. 

 

The Center is currently also accepting sponsorships. Proceeds will be utilized for educational programs and scholarships. Visit ryeartscenter.org. 

 

A Great Impression 

 

Celebrate National Women’s History month with an Armchair Art Zoom presentation at the Rye library on March 4 from 6-7. Presented by art historian Michael Norris, “Impressionist with a Woman’s Touch will explore French artist Berthe Morisot, whose art often focused on modern young women and children.

Mind, Body, Soul 

 

Wainwright’s Meditation Mondays on Zoom will offer brief instruction, guided meditation, and bodycentered inquiry from 10-10:30 starting March 1. Clinical psychologist, Ashtanga yogi, and certified meditation teacher Dawn Baird makes compassionate awareness the foundation of the meditation practice.

Top of the Morning 

 

Wainwright’s Sunrise Yoga continues next month from 6 to 7 on March 2, 4, 9, 11, 16 and 18 via Zoom. Yogi Lexy Tomaino teaches power yoga on Tuesdays, yogi Maura O’Connor covers meditation and a vinyasa flow on Thursdays.

All Rise for Women 

 

In honor of Women’s History Month, the Jay Heritage Center invites the community to join award-winning historian and Wall Street Journal columnist Dr. Amanda Foreman for a behind-the-scenes look at her documentary, “The Ascent of Woman”. The program will be held via Zoom on March 8 from 6-7. 

 

The film was the inspiration for Foreman’s forthcoming book, “The World Made by Women: A History of Women from the Apple to the Pill”. She is also the author of bestsellers “Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire” and “A World on Fire: The Epic History of Two Nations Divided”.

First Lady of the World 

Celebrate Womens History Month by joining the Rye library for a Zoom talk on Eleanor Roosevelt: Becoming Who She Was” March 10 from 6:30-7:30. The discussion, led by Jeffrey S. Urbin, Education Specialist at theRoosevelt Presidential Library and Museumexplores the many hardships and challenges that shaped a shy and insecure little girl into one of the most admired women in American history.

Small Town with a Big Dream 

Join the Rye library’s virtual book discussion group with fellow community members and Rye librarians March 12 from 7-8. The selection is Fredrik Backman’s Beartowna novel about a declining youth hockey team.

New Discoveries 

 

The Westchester Children’s Museum offers a broad range of family activities for all ages on their website, from making snowflakes and a winter storm in a jar to making gingerbread playdough and festive lanterns. Supplies required, instructions, and related scientific information are all listed.

Never Too Many Chefs in the Kitchen 

 

Ages 5-12 and their grownups can get involved in the kitchen with the Rye library’s kid-friendly Zoom cooking program every Wednesday from 4-5. Adults must be present as recipes may require use of kitchen tools, oven, or stove.  

 

Learn to make a Twinkle Cake on March 3, miniChicken Pot Pies on March 10, and Irish Cheddar Soda Bread on March 17.

Moving and Reflecting Together 

 

Families with kids in grades Kare invited to join Wainwright’s six-week yoga and mindfulness meditation workshop via Zoom. The program is offered Thursdays from March 4-April 8 from 4-4:45. Instructor Jennifer Monness will offer participants the tools to reduce stress, increase focus, and develop skills to cope with frustration through mindful moving exercises and breathing art activities.

Puppet Master 

 

The Rye Historical Society is hosting a virtual family event March 6 at 11. Internationally renowned puppeteer Hobey Ford, grandson of the Knapp Houses Simeon Ford, will share a pre-recorded Golden Rod puppet show and then join the audience for a questionandanswer session.

Take Learning Home 

 

Preschool and K-5 Take and Make Kits are available at the Rye library every Monday, giving children the tools for fun activities at home.

A Look Back in Time at Summer Camp 

 

The Rye Historical Society is offering children ages 7-13 three fun-filled weeks learning about earlier time periods. The camp will be held at the Square House Museum from July 5-23 Monday through Friday from 10–2:30. Children can look forward to hands-on experiences, storytelling, arts & crafts, games, foods, and artifact exploration. 

Children will look through the lens of the native communities who lived in the area at Native American CampJuly 5-9. There will be a visit from a Native American educator and participants will take a field trip to learn about the natural resources used. 

At Colonial History CampJuly 12-16, participants will learn about everyday life in the 1700s through performances, art and inquiry-based projects, artifact explorations, and inquiry-based projects. 

Wars and WoodstockJuly 19-23, combines War History and the 1960s, covering every topic from the Revolutionary War to 20thcentury protest movements, pop culture, and music. Interviews with local veterans will be among the highlights. 

The cost per child is $250 per week, $750 for all three weeks. Registration begins in March. For information, visit ryehistory.org.

Activist Academy 

 

Teens and their parents can participate in a lively presentation on disability rights and advocacy with internationally acclaimed LGBTQ+ advocate Jessica Kellgren-Fozard March 7 from 45:30. A follow-up session will be held March 8 from 6:30-7:15. Teens will earn community service hours.

Where’s the Loot? 

 

The Rye library is offering monthly Teen Book Loot Boxes on the first of every month. The boxes include crafts, snacks, and a personalized book. New subscribers must sign up by March 18 for next month’s box.

Spring Awakening 

Wainwright House invites all to connect with the emerging nature of spring on April 10 from 3-4:30. The workshop will be held onsite, primarily outdoors. The focus will be on the natural world and on honoring the history of the land before moving on to a walking meditation. Each participant will have the opportunity for individual meditation before gathering as a group.
