Thomas Andrew Butler of St. Petersburg, Florida, a lawyer who founded his own firm and served on the Rye City Council in the early 1960s, passed away on February 9, 2023. He was 89.

The son of Irish immigrants, Michael and Mary Butler, he and his four brothers and sister were raised in Rye. As children blessed with an entrepreneurial spirit, each found great success in their lifetime.

Tom was a graduate of Stepinac High School, class of 1950, Fordham University, class of 1959, and Fordham Law School, class of 1962. He served his country during the Korean War as an embassy guard and drill instructor in the U.S. Marine Corps and maintained his dedication through his work as legal advisor to the Marine Embassy Guard Association, which presented him with the President’s Award.

The founding partner of Butler, Fitzgerald & Potter Law Firm in New York City, he relished the intricacies of the law and advocated zealously for his clients. He was someone who quietly and respectfully helped others in need, said his family.

He met the love of his life, Barbara Dugan, 35 years ago, and they filled each day with laughter and joy.

Mr. Butler was happiest when surrounded by his wife and seven children, engaged in heated debates while eating a good Italian meal. He loved traveling the world with his “luvs” and finding a good spot to nap and enjoy the view. He was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, who always lent a word of sound advice. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Michael E. Butler, Christopher Butler (Petey), David P. Butler (George B. Lutsch), Timothy F. Butler (Robert G. Becker), Thomas A. Butler Jr. (Katie), Deirdre Ostrowski (Matt), and Alexander Butler; nine grandchildren: Brendyn, Ryan, Liam, Olivia, Griffen, Callie, Fiona, Thomas III, and Emily; his great-grandchildren, Gianna and Logan; and his brothers, Jack and Kevin. He was predeceased by his brothers, Marty and Timothy, and his sister, Margaret.

A Mass was held at Church of the Resurrection on February 14. Donations in Tom Butler’s memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the ASPCA.
