Would you like to improve your balance? Shave points off your golf game? How about slender thighs and a flat tummy? If the answer to any one of the above is an emphatic “yes,” then Pilates is for you. A new studio in town, Core Pilates, opened its doors in time to make New Year’s fitness resolutions come true.
“I’m so excited to be in the middle of town. The energy here is great,” said owner Tamara Slupchynskyj, who lives in Rye with her husband Paul Shelton and their daughters Larysa and Sofia. “Clients can incorporate their Pilates workout into their day and walk out and do their shopping or pick up their dry cleaning.”
Slupchynskyj is a certified instructor with 24 years of Pilates experience. She is also certified in Pilates for golf, which focuses on exercises to improve core strength with regard to boosting one’s swing control and body rotation. Generally, however, she believes Pilates is a mind-body exercise that benefits everyone. “You can even see how it builds a client’s self-esteem when they walk out of here.”
Located on the second floor at 22 Purchase Street, above Angela’s, the studio offers privacy and a quiet, comfortable environment. Three other certified instructors work with Slupchynskyj on all the state-of-the-art equipment, including six reformers that convert into towers and three versatile Wunda chairs for strength and balance. The studio also has a Pilates barrel, which is a “spine corrector” and stretching tool, as well as an electric chair, which Slupchynskyj calls “the booty blaster”. She explained, “It’s an incredibly challenging machine for your glutes, and it provides excellent results.”
The studio offers private and semi-private lessons for beginners and advanced Pilates’ buffs. With clients from 8 to 82, Slupchynskyj subscribes to the philosophy that one is never too young or old to improve body conditioning and proper alignment. She continues to work with master instructor Lolita San Miguel, who trained with and is one of only two students certified by founder Joseph Pilates.
“My growth as an instructor has tripled in the last few years. It has enabled me to work with breast cancer survivors, as well as with clients who’ve had hip replacements, fused discs, and knee issues,” she said. “Pilates teaches people how to function better with the changes in their bodies, so they have more control, more flexibility.”
