THE RYE FREE READING ROOM

On September 10, Read in Rye presents author Evan Weiner on Zoom from 6:30-7:30. The award-winning sports journalist and radio commentator will discuss his latest book, “Golf: How Westchester County Provided a Launching Pad for the Sport.” 

For kids, a Kindergarten Story Walk will be held on the Village Green September 12 from 3-4. Participants will pick up a special themed Take & Make bag to create at home. 

A new American Love for Nature Book reading and discussion series, co-hosted by the Rye Historical Society, begins on September 13 with “Grizzly Years” by Doug Peacock. The book, a study of grizzly bears in Montana and Wyoming, will be available for curbside pickup. 

On September 20 from 12-5, a Book Sale will be held on the Village Green. Pre-owned books will be for sale with all proceeds supporting the library. 

Sarah Wassberg Johnson is serving up “Cooking by the Book: Celebrity Chefs, Cookbookery, and the Changing Landscape of American Cuisine” at a Zoom session on September 24 at 6. Meet celebrity chefs from all over the country and across the decades. 

College–bound students and their parents will want to join in a virtual meeting on Succeeding as a Distance Learner, September 28 from 6:30-7:30. Crimson Coaching will cover strategies to make daily schedules, stay motivated, and use technology to foster academic growth.  

THE RYE YMCA  

The Y’s is reopening in phases with a limited schedule of outdoor group classes. The pools are open for lap swim, water exercise, and family swim. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7-7, Saturday 7-5. The facility will be closed on Sunday for disinfecting.  

On-line registration for fall programs has begun. Programs will include childcare, youth sports, gymnastics and swimming, as well as adult endurance swim and outdoor fitness classes. Shorter five-week sessions start September 12. Go to ryeymca.org for the program guide and to register. 

 

Don’t miss the Virtual Benefit on September 25. This fun, fast-paced Zoom fundraiser will support the Y Cares Financial Assistance program, which provides membership and program subsidies, so the Y can remain diverse and accessible to all, especially important during this time of widespread job loss and illness.  

 

THE RYE ARTS CENTER  

Private lessons in Music and STEAM education are continuing, both in-person and virtually. For the full roster of fall classes beginning in early October, visit ryeartscenter.org. 

 

The Center is collaborating with The Ground Glass to host The Ground Glass Photography Outdoor Exhibit, running August 31 to September 14. A reception with the artists will be held September 3 from 5-6. The Ground Glass is an association of fine art photographers. The rain date is September 10. 

 

 

WAINWRIGHT HOUSE

JAY HERITAGE CENTER 

 

Join the Center for a virtual discussion with critically acclaimed historian Ian Toll on September 11 from 6-7. The author will discuss the final volume in his epic trilogy of World War II naval history, “Twilight of the Gods: War in the Western Pacific, 1944-1945”.
