The Beauty Box is highlighting a great cause at a Cut-a-Thon benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on March 6 from 10-4. Not only will stylists and colorists be volunteering their time, all services will be available at a discount. In addition, 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated in honor of Team Mateo, whose 4-year-old namesake was diagnosed with Pre-B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

“I have five healthy children and consider myself incredibly lucky,” said salon owner Gaynor Donelan, whose children range in age from 8-15. “I wanted to do something to get involved with a charity, a good cause.”
Beyond mobilizing her troop at her Rye salon, she has signed up to run the New York City Chapter’s half-marathon, 13.1 miles, in Central Park on March 20.

“I’m not a runner, so when I started training in late September, I couldn’t run for one block. Now I run ten miles five or six times a week,” said Donelan, who trained with her brother, military veteran David Baillie. “I’m getting into shape, I feel better, and we’re helping someone who really needs the help.”

Acute Lymphoblastic
Leukemia is a cancer of the bone marrow and blood, which progresses rapidly without treatment. According to the American Cancer Society, leukemia is the most common childhood cancer with about 2,700 children diagnosed in this country every year.

Through the Society’s Team in Training program, Donelan joined forces with Antonio Mateo, running in the New York City marathon in honor of his son. To visit their fundraising page, log on to http://pages.teamintraining.org/ctwhv/halfnyc16/teammateo.

To participate in the salon’s Cut-a-Thon, simply call for an appointment. A haircut is $50, a blow dry $30, single-process hair color $60, and face frame hi-lights $75. In addition, 20 percent of any retail purchase will go to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

“We can only hope we’re one step closer to finding a cure,” said Donelan. “If you can’t support your community, you can’t expect the community to support you.”

The Beauty Box is located at 1005 Boston Post Road. For an appointment, call 967-0373.
