The recipients of the annual Rye Youth Council Awards possess everything the Tin Man, the Lion, and the Scarecrow went looking for at the beginning of “The Wizard of Oz” — heart, courage, and brains. They reach out to those in need, without having to be asked to. They dedicate themselves to making a difference.

While many students are striving for straight A’s, it’s safe to say these Rye teens are all C’s: character, commitment, creativity, community, consideration.

The Awards Breakfast held at Rye Presbyterian Church every spring is always good for the soul. Before the awards are presented you look around at the volunteers who assembled this joyful event. You turn to the stranger on your left and are soon deep in conversation. And when the presenters call out the names, you feel like cheering.

As RYC President Lisa Faries said in her opening remarks, “The students in this room are truly special.”
