Eduardo Antonio D’Almeida, a cherished husband, father, and friend, passed away on November 28, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. He was 59. His life was one of commitment and service. He was well known in Rye, N.Y., where he was a taxi driver for nearly three decades.

Born on August 20, 1964, to Eduardo D’Almeida and Maria Lizone Birnbaum, he was raised in the vibrant metropolis of Curitiba, Brazil. After graduating from high school, he worked in the hospitality business, eventually owning his own restaurant.

During the economic crisis of the 1990s, Mr. D’Almeida relocated to Rye, to seek opportunity and find a way to support his family in Brazil. Soon after arriving in 1992, he began working as a livery service driver. He returned to Brazil in 1996 for two years to care for his elderly mother at the end of her life.

For almost 30 years, he worked as a driver for the Rye Cab Company, which he eventually owned. His colleagues remember him as a man who always went the extra mile, both on the road and in his relationships. Many of his regular passengers became friends who appreciated his friendly conversation, warmth, calm demeanor, professionalism, and genuine care. He retired in 2023.

On May 21, 2017, he married Morelia Castro. Their union was a testament to love’s enduring power and the joy of finding companionship later in life.

Throughout his life, said his family, “Edward faced challenges with courage, tenacity, and a smile that never waned. He was a beacon of optimism, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a word of encouragement. His generosity knew no bounds.”

In addition to his wife, Morelia, he is survived by his son, Brian D’Almeida; his stepson, David Castro (Angelica); his sister, Adelaide D’Almeida; and his niece, Liziane D’Almeida. He doted on his granddaughters, Ava and Aria Castro who brought him immense joy and laughter.

A memorial service was held December 2 at Rye Presbyterian Church, to which the family asks that donations be made.
