It would be hard to find a Rye couple that better exemplifies “aging in place with grace” than Carolyn and John Cunningham, who were honored by SPRYE at their fourth annual benefit October 1.

The Cunninghams have made a difference in the lives of so many others in their community through words and deeds in their 46 years in town. As SPRYE President Barbara Brunner graciously said in her remarks at the gathering, “If you have kept up with environmental issues, you have probably crossed paths with Carolyn. And if you love the theater and the arts, you most certainly have enjoyed John’s performances.”

Carolyn worked as an environmental lawyer for the Natural Resources Defense Council. A former City Councilwoman has headed Rye’s Conservation Commission/Advisory Council and continues to serve on that board as well as the Planning Commission. For over 20 years, she has been a member of the board of the Rye Interfaith Housing Corporation, the non-profit owner of Rye Manor, the affordable senior housing facility on Theall Road.

While John’s acting career has taken him to Broadway — 19 times — and beyond, longtime residents have fond memories of the “Playwrights and Players” he and Frances Sternhagen put on in the Rye High School Performing Arts Center. More recently, the duo staged a sold-out comedic evening at The Osborn. “Law & Order” fans have as much praise for John’s character-acting skills as those who gather on Rye’s Village Green every Independence Day and listen to him bring history back to life.

Carolyn and John have not only shared their talents, they’ve created an era of good feelings that will endure.
