I have lived and worked in Rye for over 50 years, and in the past several years have witnessed an increasing disregard for biking and walking safety regulations. As an avid walker, every day I see someone either biking or walking on the wrong side of the street. As a grandmother, parent, and friend I am concerned for everyone’s safety.
Many children are not wearing helmets, which are required by state law for ages 14 and under, and many are biking on sidewalks, which are designed for pedestrians. In addition, when children bike on streets far too many of them are not biking with the traffic. I have also seen many adults walking with, instead of against, the traffic. These behaviors are troubling and dangerous.
I encourage every parent to teach their children to follow traffic laws and to do so themselves.
