Local Golfers Just Miss State Tournament

Three golfers from local high schools played in the Section 1 tournament this week: Chelsea Wang, an eighth grader in her first year on the Rye Neck varsity, and Doug Beney and Dominic Sculti, both sophomores at Rye High.
Chelsea entered Wednesday’s final round at Whippoorwill Golf Club tied for the final spot on the Sectional team that will be going to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships June 1-2 at Deerfield Country Club in upstate Brockport. Despite a wobbly front side, the young Panther star played her 14th through 17 holes in one-under, putting her back in contention. But she hit her second shot on the closing hole into the fescue, settling for a seven and missing the cut by a single stroke.
In the boys’ tourney, Beney and Sculti both shot well enough to vie for a trip to the State championships. Sculti would shoot an 83 on Wednesday, good enough for a top-20 finish that earned him All-Section laurel. Beney went him one better with an 82, a score that made him second alternate on the State team. He also earned All-Section recognition.
Wang’s coach, Mark Canno, is in his 14th year at Rye Neck. He said, “When the season started, I thought Chelsea would be fourth or fifth in our lineup. But after she shot a 41 at Hampshire Country Club and a 44 at Metropolis from the men’s tees, she took over as our number one. She is usually a very quiet girl but is very competitive on the course. She has an amazing future ahead of her.”
