Leigh Bowen
Leigh Stander Bowen, a longtime resident of Rye, passed away peacefully at home on December 26, 2018.
Born in Baltimore on October 12, 1930, she was the daughter of Henricus Johannes Stander, MD and Florence Mary Leigh Creelman.
She graduated from Scarsdale High School in 1948 and went on to receive a B.A. in English from Wellesley College in 1952 and an M.A. in Literature from Sarah Lawrence College in 1964. She taught literature and writing at The Masters School, Mercy College, Westchester Community College, Pace University, and the Greenwich Board of Education.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, John S. (Jack) Bowen; her three children: Mark Bowen of Barnet, Vt.; Charles (Chip) Bowen of Bozeman, Mont.; and Holly Bowen Lehman of Pound Ridge, N.Y.; her six grandchildren: Andrew Bowen of Boulder, Colo.; Anna Bowen of Rochester, N.Y.; Isabel and Emma Bowen of Bozeman, Mont., and Abigail and Penn Lehman of Pound Ridge; and her sister, Margaret Shannon of Belgrade Lakes, Me.
A memorial service will be held in February.
